No more season parking tags or carpark tailgaters. These are just some of the latest hi-tech initiatives that are transforming how we park in Singapore.

Here’s a look at some of the latest innovations and how they’ll impact road users.

End of the road for season parking tags.

Motorists no longer need to display their season parking RFID tag at HDB carparks.

The new rules are said to make it more convenient for motorists who will no longer need to replace lost or damaged Radio Frequency Identification Tags (RFID).

Instead, HDB enforcement staff will have access to motorists’ season parking information from their Electronic Handheld Terminals.

Motorists have been told that they can throw away their tags as they do not store any personal information but have been advised to cut up their tags before throwing.

Instead of receiving tags, motorists will now know if their application for a season ticket has been successful when they receive an acknowledgement page at the end of their online transaction when applying and paying for their season parking ticket.

Season parking explained.

A valid season parking lets you park at any car park in an HDB car park group at any time. There’s no need to display parking coupons. It’s good for long-term parking, and is sold on a calendar month basis.

Parking lots in high occupancy car parks are allocated according to order of priority.

To check the validity of your season parking and the car parks you can park at, you can log in to www.hdb.gov.sg/myhdbpage.

You will also be able to look for other car parks within the same HDB car park group to park at, if your preferred one is full.

You can submit your application to the HDB website.

Here you can make an online payment using your credit card or debit card.

Don’t miss out on a 2% rebate when you pay through GIRO.

Coupon Parking

If you are parking at a car park with the parking coupon system, and do not have a valid season parking, you need to display valid parking coupons.

Singapore’s mobile parking app.

Don’t forget Singapore’s latest parking app. You can also choose to pay for parking charges digitally through the Parking.sg mobile app. Despite this having had a few teething problems with system glitches and the like, it has been quite well received overall. It’s always a good idea to have one or two parking coupons in your car, though, just in case. More details on the parking app here.

Tailgaters evading carpark charges will be nabbed.

Meanwhile, we await the arrival of the Tailgating Detection System (TDS) which is to be introduced in the second half of 2018.

Tailgaters will no longer get away with evading their parking fees as they’ll be detected upon exit of the car park. Sensors sited at the exits of the Electronic Parking Systems EPS carparks will measure the distance between vehicles as they approach the carpark gantries. The culprits cars and details will be caught on camera.

Underground bike parking system

The initiative called SecureMyBike is located within the Kampung Admirality development next to the Admiralty MRT station and can house 500 bikes.

From May, 2018 the monthly charges will be $48 for a season parking pass or 45 cents per hour.

So far, some cyclists have complained about the ‘high costs’ of using the bike system, which took four years to construct at a cost of $4.7 million. But it’s early days yet to make any real assessments.

Cyclists can sign up for an account at one of the self-help registration kiosks at a SecureMyBike shop, located next to the bike parking kiosks.
