Spectacular road trips The incredible Cameron Highlands
Not too much, not too little. The Cameron Highlands is just right. Imagine fresh air, a cool climate and rolling countryside. And, amazingly this place is right on Singapore’s doorstep. So if you want an epic road trip that is nearer than Australia, why not head north over the border to Malaysia?
The intrepid travel team at Budget Direct Insurance has all the road-tested advice you need in our latest series celebrating the magnificence of the road trip. We explore some of the easiest road trips around, where the driving is a dream and the scenery spectacular.
Here is our all-in-one trip planner to Malaysia’s Cameron Highlands.
Nestled in the northwestern tip of Pahang, the Cameron Highlands is around 200 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur. At 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) to 1,600 metres (5,200 ft) above sea level it feels a lot less hot and humid than Singapore. During the day, the temperature rarely goes above 25 °C (77 °F) while at night it can drop to as low as 9 °C (48 °F). So take a jacket!
Take to the road
Once you have cleared the border from Singapore the drive to the Highlands is relatively easy, there are toll roads all the way to Simpang Pulai. The last part, around a 90-minute climb to Tanah Rata, is the only intrepid part. The easier and less winding route is to use is the Simpang Pulai exit to the northern end of the Camerons rather than the old Tapah Road.
Once you get there, the roads in the Cameron Highlands are narrow, winding and single carriageway, making it difficult to overtake. During peak holiday times expect heavy traffic through the towns and be patient if a car has stopped or broken down.
It’s at least an 8-hour drive from the Singapore border so regular stops are recommended. It may be best to break your journey with an overnight stay in KL or Melaka.
Why should you make the journey?
The Cameron Highlands is unlike any other place in Malaysia. It has its very own ecosystem and is home to hundreds of floral species that are rare to the tropics.
Its unique climate means tea plantations thrive and visiting one of them is a must. Find the juiciest strawberries on one of the many farms or take tea like the British used to do in the afternoon in one of the traditional cafes or restaurants.
Trek in the jungle, try climbing Mount Brinchang (a guide is recommended), or visit the mossy forest where low level clouds driven by winds blanket the forest with mist and moisture encouraging moss, fern, lichen and orchids to grow.
Accommodation options in the Cameron Highlands are varied and there is something for all budgets. Inns and guesthouses are popular or get close to nature with a traditional forest hut overlooking a waterfall.
The Camerons is an easy road trip from Singapore and takes minimal planning. Check out our previous blog for one of Australia’s greatest road trips or read the nest in the series for more driving adventures.
