Singaporean neighbourhoods with the most crime

Singapore has a reputation for being one of the safest countries in the world, yet there are areas on the island that are more prone to crime. 

Here’s a look at some neighbourhoods which have chalked up the most number of crimes in recent years including car thefts.

Tampines

This neighbourhood in the east averaged the third most car thefts. There was an increase of 17.8 per year from 2012 to 2016.

Jurong West

This area had the highest reported number of cases of outrage of modesty – 49 per year in 2016. 

Nanyang ward

This ward had the most unlicensed money-lending cases – 76 per year in 2016. 

Yishun north

Yishun north is allegedly the most crime-prone area. It had the most loan shark harassment cases – 232 cases in 2016, the highest number in Singapore. 

Woodlands East

This area was particularly plagued by harassment by moneylenders  (185 cases in 2016) and car theft (9 cases reported in 2016).

Notwithstanding these figures, you’ll be glad to know that Singapore is still one of the safest countries to live in. It was ranked second in the Economist’s 2017 Safe Cities Index.

What’s more, the crime rate here has decreased overall by 15% over the last decade.

According to ValueChampion, the safest neighbourhoods in Singapore are as follows: 

  1. Bukit Timah

    This neighbourhood had the least number of crimes reported between 2012 and 2016. There was no snatch theft or robbery reported in 2016. The number of crimes fell by 43 per cent from 2012 and 2016.

  2. Bishan

    Bishan also has a low crime rate, with no reports of snatch thefts or unlicensed money lending in 2016. Increasing its attractiveness to homeowners is its closeness to parks and the central business district.

  3. Kampong Java

    Crime in this neighbourhood fell by 38% between 2014 and 2016. There were two cases of robberies and three of house break-ins in 2016, which is a drop from 15 robberies and 13 house break-ins in 2013. There was only one incidence of car theft in 2016, compared to 17 in 2012. This certainly makes Kampong Java an area worth considering if you are planning to relocate.

  4. Marine Parade

    Another safe neighbourhood is Marine Parade. Between 2012 and 2016, Marine Parade experienced an average of 106 crimes per year -- which is far fewer than the approximately 260 crimes reported in the average neighbourhood.

  5. Sembawang

    Located in the north, Sembawang is not only one of themore affordable neighbourhoods in Singapore, it also scores high on the safety factor. There were no robberies or snatch thefts reported in 2016 and only one car theft.
