Frequently Asked Questions on Car Accident Claims
If you have a dispute over an accident fault, damages repairs, or settlement during a car accident claim, first raise your concerns to your own insurer - if you are submitting an own damage claim, or to the third-party insurer involved if you are submitting a third-party claim - by providing supporting evidence. If unresolved, request a further review or consider mediation through the Financial Industry Disputes Resolution Centre Ltd (FIDReC), which handles motor insurance disputes in Singapore.
After a car accident in Singapore, insurers, the police, and sometimes third parties assess fault by reviewing the accident scene, vehicle registration numbers, driver particulars, and conditions such as road and weather. Evidence like photos, videos, witness statements, and a police report (mandatory if there is injury or fatality) is used to determine liability. Drivers must exchange contact and insurance details to support the investigation. If you are not at fault, you can claim against the other party’s insurer. If you are found partially or fully liable, your No Claim Discount (NCD) may be reduced, and your renewal premium could increase.
After you file a car accident claim in Singapore, your insurer will investigate the cause of the accident and assess vehicle damage. A claims executive will guide you through the process and may review the damaged vehicle, examine the accident and police reports, interview witnesses, and liaise with repair workshops for cost estimates. You’ll need to provide documents such as photos and videos of the accident scene, the accident report, vehicle registration number, and the other parties’ contact and insurance details. Once the investigation is complete, the insurer will process your claim, offer a settlement, or request more information.
