Motorcycle Insurance Singapore – Common Questions

View All Motorcycle Insurance FAQs

Why do I need Motorbike Insurance?

Motorcycle insurance is a must-have for every motorcycle owner in Singapore. Not only is it required by law, but it also provides financial protection in case of accidents or damage to the motorcycle. With a comprehensive motorcycle insurance policy, you can ensure that you are covered in case of unexpected events, such as theft, fire, or accidents. Additionally, motorcycle insurance provides benefits such as liability coverage.

In Singapore, motorcycle insurance coverage is mandatory, and it is essential to choose a policy that suits your needs and budget. With the right motorcycle insurance policy, you can ride with peace of mind, knowing that you are protected in case of any unexpected events.

What types of Motorbike Insurance can I choose from?

We have three types of policies you can choose from for your motorcycle.

Third Party Only is the most basic plan and covers your legal responsibility for damage to other people’s property or bodily injury or death to other people caused by an accident involving your motorcycle. It doesn’t cover damage to your own motorcycle.

Third Party Fire and Theft covers the same as Third Party Only plus loss or damage to your motorcycle if it is stolen or catches fire.

Comprehensive covers the same as Third Party Fire and Theft plus any damage to your motorcycle up to its market value.

Can anyone ride my motorbike?

Your policy will cover the Main Rider of your motorcycle, as well as one other person who regularly uses your bike.

Named Rider Plan

Our insurance plan covers ONLY:

  • The person who uses your motorcycle most frequently (i.e. the Main Rider), and
  • One other person you include on your policy as a Named Rider.

IMPORTANT: The Policyholder must also be listed either as a Named Rider or the Main Rider under the Named Rider Plan in order to be covered under your motorcycle insurance policy.

Do I have to tell you if I ride to work on my motorcycle?

Yes, when you go through our 'get a quote' process, we will ask you how you use your motorcycle. Here are the definitions of vehicle usage:

Private and Commuting Use is use of your motorcycle for social, domestic and pleasure purposes, and for travelling between home and a regular place of work only.

Private and Occasional Business Use is “Private and Commuting Use” above, plus use for occasional business purposes by the Main Rider or Named Rider only. "Occasional Business” means your motorcycle is not registered for business use, and the use of your motorbike is not an essential part of earning income for a business.

Private and Business Use is "Private and Commuting Use” above, plus use for the business and/or occupation by the Main Rider or Named Rider only.

We allow:

  • Carrying of goods or samples which are not for sale or payment

We do not allow:

  • carrying of passengers or delivery of goods in connection with any trade or business (for example, for despatch or courier purposes) whether paid or not;
  • any purpose in connection with Motor Trade;
  • driving tuition or test (whether paid or not);
  • hire to other people;
  • or any other purposes which we have not agreed to in writing.

Please read our Policy Disclosure Document (PDD) for full details on vehicle usage and restrictions.

Will there be a replacement motorcycle/ loss of use/ transport allowance when my motorcycle is undergoing repair?

There will be no replacement motorcycle. If you purchased our Transport Allowance optional cover, we will pay you S$30 per day, capped at a maximum of 10 days per accident and subject to a total of 20 days per policy year.

This Transport Allowance optional cover is only available for Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance and Third Party Fire and Theft Insurance policy types.

What factors affect Motorcycle Insurance prices?

Motorcycle insurance prices can vary significantly depending on several factors. By knowing what influences your premiums, you can better tailor your coverage to fit your needs and budget. Here are just some factors that affect your motorcycle insurance prices.

Age
Age is a significant factor in determining motorcycle insurance prices. Younger riders, typically those under the age of 25, are considered higher-risk and are often charged higher premiums. As riders get older, their premiums may decrease due to their increased experience and lower risk of accidents. Insurance companies view older, more experienced riders as less likely to be involved in accidents, which can lead to lower motorcycle insurance premiums.

Type of Bike
The type of bike you own can also impact your motorcycle insurance prices. Sports bikes, for example, tend to be more expensive to insure than standard bikes due to their higher power and speed. Insurance companies consider sports bikes to be higher-risk vehicles, which increases premiums.

Previous claim history and No-Claim Discount (NCD)
Your previous claim history and No-Claim Discount (NCD) can also impact your motorcycle insurance prices. Riders with a history of claims tend to pay higher premiums due to their increased risk of accidents. On the other hand, riders with a clean claim history can enjoy lower premiums and a higher NCD, which can provide additional discounts on their motorcycle insurance policy. Maintaining a good riding record and avoiding claims can significantly reduce your motorcycle insurance costs over time.
