Laura - Legal

Laura – Legal

I was attracted to join BDI because...

I was – and still am – very grateful to find a company that allows me to be on flexible work arrangements, which meets my needs as a mum to 3 young boisterous boys. This is one of the many ways that BDI shows and practices how it genuinely cares for its people.

A typical day for me is...

Waking up at 6.10am, checking emails and schedule. After driving my kids to school, it’s full concentration in the office. At 1pm, I fetch the kids from school and spend some time with them before getting back to work. After dinner, the mad rush and drama of supervising the kids continue till 9pm. If I don’t get knocked out, I continue working before calling it a day!

What I really enjoy about working at BDI is...

That my work hours and arrangements are generally respected by all in the office. I am also happy that the Legal department is not seen by other business units as being roadblocks to their plans but trusted as partners whom they can lean on for guidance and advice.

One thing that I've realised in my career, as a woman in leadership, is...

Being a woman should not be seen as a weakness. In fact, we should work our gender inclinations to our advantage – e.g. (generally) having greater attention to detail, the willingness and patience to listen, and more empathy. Be yourself at work and allow people to see and appreciate what you can bring to the table.

Poh Lian – Technology

I was attracted to join BDI because...

I felt a great sense of trust in my boss and found a fabulous team who supported my flexi working arrangement.

A typical day for me is...

Squeezing a "36-hour job" into 1 day. My day starts at 6am sending my kids to school, followed by back-to-back office meetings and picking my kids up after 1pm. It gets so hectic that I often hold conference calls in my car – when parked, of course! Once the kids are in bed at 10pm, I catch up on work that I might have missed while I was out on the roads in the afternoon.

What I really enjoy about working at BDI is...

That the people here are more friends than colleagues. I am also thankful for the encouraging culture - simply reading books on leadership and applying the advice won't get me far without the support of my boss and the people around me.

One thing that I’ve realised in my career, as a woman in leadership, is...

The leadership quality is in a person, not just the role or location. If you have it, you have it anywhere you may be.

Deny - Marketing

I was attracted to join BDI because...

Working with like-minded people and having a supportive boss and work environment were - and continue to be - very important to me, since we spend a third of our day in the office!

A typical day for me is...

Apart from a series of meetings, I’ll be catching up on variety of activities - such as project management, reporting & analytics, reviewing work and planning for future campaigns. I often find myself wondering how time flies every day.

What I really enjoy about working at BDI is...

Being part of growing the business, as we work closely as a family and our voices are heard. I’d worked in some corporate giants with global offices in the past – one of BDI’s values “Look out for each other” resonates with me because when we help others, we help ourselves.

One thing that I’ve realised in my career, as a woman in leadership, is...

Don't be shy to ask for help. Trust and delegate, allow others to grow and learn from mistakes as I was able to.
