Singapore motorbikers! Keep your machine clean with these top hacks.

Some motorcyclists actually enjoy the process of cleaning their bikes, while for others it is nothing but a messy chore. Either way, here are a few tips to make the process smoother and the results better:

• Let the bike cool before washing – a hot bike will make water evaporate faster, leaving marks from the minerals in the water.
• Rinse first – it can help loosen grit which may scratch paintwork if you go at it with soapy water and a sponge to begin.
• Start with the dirty bits. Degrease the chain using a proprietary degreaser – remember to re-lube the chain after you’re finished! WD40 is a great solvent for splashes of chain lube, bitumen and the like on other parts. Spray it on a cloth first and then wipe, to ensure it’s going where you want. Avoid spraying WD40 or degreaser on wheel hubs, where they may remove the grease you need.
• Wash using a sponge or damp cloth with detergents for car cleaning, rather than household types, which may be abrasive. Rinse frequently while cleaning, as dried soap residue can leave marks, or worse, cause corrosion on alloy parts.
• Dry the paintwork, and take the bike for a ride around the block – there will be water that you can’t reach that will find its way out that may otherwise leave marks. Be careful, as the brakes may not work at their best after the wash.
• Dry again and polish the paintwork with car wax. The wax will leave a protective shine on paintwork, but test it first on a hard-to-see spot to ensure it doesn’t leave abrasions – you want liquid wax as opposed to a cutting compound unless you’re restoring dull paintwork. Microfibre cloths are perfect for application and buffing the surface when done.
• Details matter! The overall shine can easily be let down by overlooking the details – a bit of dull-looking chrome or dirty wheels can really take the edge off an otherwise perfect-looking job. Metal polish is excellent to get a shine on dull alloy parts and should leave a protective layer to make the shine last longer – read the label and make sure it is formulated for alloy. Avoid tyre-shine products though, as overspray onto the grip surface can be dangerous.
• Don’t forget to lubricate the chain and control cables properly before your next ride.
