Opel Mokka X Hot or not?

The youngsters of today have adopted the full-on gourmet approach when it comes to caffeine. They spend their days sipping expensive coffee with exotic names. And given the spending power of these coffee connoisseurs, it was only a matter of time before someone named a car after one of their most popular brews.

Anyone for an Opel Mokka?

1) What is it?

The Opel Mokka X is one of the many, many crossovers available on the market right now. In an effort to be ‘hip’ and ‘with the times’, it’s deliberately misnamed after a popular coffee concoction. The ‘X’ is a new addition, applied to the face-lift version (the previous one wasn’t sold in Singapore). It’s probably meant to allude to all the ‘X-treme’ stuff that this car can do. Or at least thinks it can do.

2) Hot or not?

It could be argued that the Mokka X looks a tad awkward. It is short in length (4,275mm long) but tall in height (1,658mm tall). This design makes it rather ungainly, like a regular hatchback on stilts. Or like it’s been squashed between two other cars. Perhaps more glass, or a lower window belt line, or a longer, lower bonnet might help. At the moment, there’s a lot of metal on show.

Still, the design does have its benefits. There is plenty of space, specifically headroom. Your average basketballer would be able to fit inside with no problem. Its compact dimensions mean that the Mokka X is pretty nippy and zippy to drive around town; maneuvering and parking in tight spaces is a piece of cake.

In Singapore, the Mokka X is only available with a 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine. This produces 136bhp and 320Nm of torque, which is makes for a journey as smooth as whipped cream. The low-end torque means that the Mokka X is pretty handy when accelerating off the line, and on the whole the car is mostly agreeable, enough to satisfy shall we say.

3) Should I buy one?

If you’re a coffee connoisseur, then most definitely. After all, what could be cooler than driving a car named Mokka? Groovy name aside, the Mokka X manages to stand out from the masses of other crossovers populating our roads these days, thanks to its unique looks and diesel power.

All in all, a grande choice. “Enough with the café puns,” said literally everyone!!
